Labour back down on MPs expenses secrecy

The BBC are reporting that the government has shelved plans to hold a vote on proposals to restrict the amount of information published about MPs’ expenses.

Gordon Brown announced this u-turn at Prime Minister’s Question Time today, suggesting that he abandoned the proposals because the Tories had backed down from an agreement to support them. The Liberal Democrats had already said they would issue a three-line whip on their 63 MPs to vote against the exemption of MPs from freedom of information legislation.

MPs will still vote on tomorrow on separate proposals to tighten up the auditing of expenses and revisions to the expenses rule book.
