The old accusation is that somebody could not organise a booze-up in a brewery, well if this morning’s Western Mail is anything to go by it seems that the One Wales coalition is guilty of the governmental equivalent, an inability to organise a summit in a Capital City.
The paper tells us that the Government has been left with egg on its face after hiring a company to drive political VIPs to an international summit conference in unlicensed vehicles.
The event is the British-Irish Council at the Swalec Stadium this Friday, featuring politicians from Westminster, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. The council was set up as part of the Good Friday agreement that ended decades of violence in Ulster. It provides a forum for heads of the UK, Irish and devolved administrations to discuss matters of common interest across a wide range of policy areas.
However, one of the companies hired to ferry politicians around next week has vehicles that are not licensed to operate. Wilson Chauffeur Services of St Fagans was asked by the Assembly Government to do the work, even though no checks were made by officials to ensure the limousines were properly licensed.
As Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Kirsty Williams said: “This doesn’t project a professional and positive business-like image of Wales.”
