Liberal Democrat Education plan would give extra £230 million to Wales

Welsh Liberal Democrats have welcomed plans announced this week by Nick Clegg that will provide a massive injection of cash for the poorest pupils whilst cutting class sizes in England and would lead to a net gain of £4.6 billion to the English education budget.

Welsh Liberal Democrat have calculated that these plans will lead to a £230 million boost through the Barnett formula to the Welsh block grant. In addition because Nick Clegg’s plans include the abolition of tuition fees in higher education, the Assembly Government would also save the £61 million spent every year on the tuition fees grant. That money could close the Higher Education funding gap between England and Wales.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have pledged that they would put the extra money into closing the schools funding gap, cutting class sizes and investing money to help the poorest pupils.
