Warnings over Welsh Health Service

This morning’s Western Mail raised a number of issues in relation to the state of Wales’ health service.

The paper predicts an impending crisis in the Welsh health service as front-line workers face the consequences of damaging staff shortages. This forecast is prompted by figures which show that there are more than 160 vacancies for doctors in the Welsh NHS.

In the meantime the much-criticised Welsh Ambulance Service – already under fire over repeated failures to meet response time targets – has been forced to recruit St John Ambulance crews to perform key services.

There are big issues surrounding the ambulance service, which will become more evident when the latest performance figures are published on Wednesday. In the meantime the Minister needs to address the workforce planning issues around the shortage of doctors.
