Plaid Cymru launched their very professional looking website calling for Welsh Independence today to a fanfare of indifference from the public. Frankly, most have other things on their minds other than a minority pursuit that could well lead to the country being declared bankrupt.
Of particular interest is the section entitled ‘busting the myths’ which lists comparably sized countries who have all managed to go it alone. It is notable that despite being heralded a few months ago as an example to be followed, Iceland is missing from that list. The nationalists may also have to remove Ireland before long too if predictions about the Irish banking system being in trouble prove to correct.
Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader, Kirsty Williams is particularly damning in her comments on this initiative. She told the media that “Our priorities at the moment are to get Wales through the recession and look towards getting more effective law-making powers for Wales. Why is Plaid Cymru so keen on promoting independence yet reluctant to launch a ‘Yes campaign’ for full law-making powers? They need to get their priorities right.
“It’s very rich of Plaid Cymru to be calling for £3 billion from the UK government one week and the week after call for independence. Plaid Cymru cannot have it both ways!
“At a time when people are more worried about their jobs, students concerned about how they will finance their education and little support for independence, this just goes to show that Plaid Cymru is totally out of touch with the people of Wales.”
