The Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Minister, Jenny Randerson has responded to the announcement by the Education Minister today of the introduction of Top-up fees by accusing Labour and Plaid Cymru of abandoning students and pushing them towards increased debt.
She said: “However complex this set of announcements is, it does not disguise the fact that funding for students to get to University is being slashed by approximately 40%#
“Labour’s debt generation has just become Labour and Plaid’s debt generation.
“There are some measures that are welcome, but as a whole, the Welsh Liberal Democrats cannot support this package, which sees top-up fees arrive in Wales.
“I am also deeply concerned that there was only a passing mention of part-time students, and no clear indication as to how the Minister will approach the issue of participation in the part-time HE sector.
“We will remain committed to closing the dangerous funding gap that WAG has created, but we will never do this by dipping our hands into the pockets of Welsh students.”
