Government early release scheme is failing

Today, the Welsh Lib Dems released research using yesterday’s prison population and early release figures, revealing that although 2,448 prisoners have been released early from Welsh prisons since July 2007, the prison population in Wales has hit 2,825, it’s highest ever level.

Commenting, Jenny Willott, Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, said:

“The Government’s early release scheme is clearly failing.

“The Government was forced to introduce early release to try to deal with a prison population they had let get hopelessly out of control.

“Despite releasing 4 prisoners early every day since mid 2007, Welsh prisons are now more overcrowded than ever.

“The Government has been sending more and more people to prison than ever before and yet reoffending levels remain sky high.

“Ministers must invest in effective alternative forms of punishment and rehabilitation if they are to regain control of the prison system.”
