Message from Kirsty Williams on Parliamentarians’ expenses

Welsh Liberal Democrat AMs will not be able to profit from selling their subsidised second homes under rules currently being devised. All Welsh Lib Dem candidates, including MPs defending seats at the next general election, will have to sign the pledge and money made from AMs’ second homes would be handed back to the Assembly’s fees office.

At her weekly press briefing, Kirsty — who rents her accommodation in Cardiff — said a code of conduct was being drawn up in response to the furore over MPs’ expenses and would be ready in the summer.

She said: “Anybody that doesn’t sign up to that code of conduct will not be a Welsh Liberal Democrat candidate in any election.”

A mechanism would be devised so money made from selling property could be repaid to the Assembly, she said.

She added: “I am shocked by the revelations from some MPs in all parties. Assembly members have already verbally signed up to a system where they will not profit from any second home here in Cardiff. Being in politics is not about getting money out of property deals. I want to take that out of it. The expectation is that all candidates will have to sign the document.”
