There is an interesting article on the Cyrmu X blog from a few days ago in which the author seeks to paint a picture of the consequences of the One Wales Government’s cuts in post 16 education. She writes:
Cuts are being made at sixth form centres and colleges, leading to less hours for staff or a complete axing of jobs. This also affects pupils who are unable to study the courses of their choice due to a lack of funding. A number of pupils have already faced this situation when choosing A Levels and have been unable to follow the course of their choice because their School or College could not afford to run it. This is particularly apparent with less popular A level courses, including languages such as German etc. This may have a profound affect on the future of individuals who need to study particular A Levels in order to follow their chosen course at University.
As more and more people lose their jobs at this difficult time, members of staff are also under enormous pressure. Some are informed that the School/College cannot afford to run their course and that they no longer have a job, whilst others who teach core subjects such as Welsh and Mathematics face a reduction in their hours because the School/College does not have sufficient funds to provide them with full-time employment.
Unfortunately, the author goes on to rather ruin her argument by suggesting that local Plaid Cymru AMs are working to fix this problem, rather conveniently forgetting that it was Plaid, in partnership with Labour who created the problem in the first place. She says that “Plaid feels strongly that we should try and protect key educational services locally’.
If that is the case then maybe they should make sure that the relevant funding is in place from the Welsh Government to deliver that aspiration.
