Well they say a week is a long time in politics, and what a week it has been. My mind is doing somersaults trying to keep up with all that is going on and the possible ramifications of it, for us as a Party and of course wearing my RCT hat for us in Pontypridd.
Labour are in a downward spiral and it is difficult to see how they can stop the rot.
The events surrounding Gordon Brown’s Government have taken on an almost surreal quality. It seems that every time you switch on the news there is another high profile resignation. How much of this can Brown take? How long can he survive?
So what’s next? Who knows where this is heading? We can only speculate at this stage, and please feel free to take this with as large a pinch of salt as you feel appropriate
Pressure is growing on Brown from within his own Party to step down, the talk of people ‘fully behind’ him has a hollow ring – what better position from which to wield the knife? And if he did what would a leadership election at this point do to a Labour party already approaching meltdown? It’s not going to be a pretty sight
From outside of course pressure grows for him to call an election, with Nick Clegg amongst those saying he should go to the polls. If pushed from within will he dig his heels in and let the people decide? Nothing would surprise me at the moment given the speed at which things are moving and the mess this Government has got itself into. And where does that leave us?
Some areas will of course be better prepared than others, and a snap General Election would not be without its challenges – but as ever we will rise to the occasion! Nothing us Welsh Lib Dems like more than a challenge
Whatever happens we only have at most a year until the election. The good work that has been going on in recent months during the European campaign needs to be rolled on.
The Welsh Liberal Democrats now have a solid central campaign team. There is an enthusiasm and energy about the Party as a whole. We want to win, and whenever the General Election is called, and whoever is leading the Labour Party at the time, we will be ready for the battle.
