Lembit wages war on the modelling industry

Welsh Liberal Democrat MP, Lembit Őpik has teamed up with model Katie Green to wage war on the modelling industry.

Kate Green famously quit a job after she was told that she needed to lose two stones. She blames the fashion world for the rising number of young girls with eating disorders.

According to figures put together by the Liberal Democrats, there has been a 47 per cent increase of anorexia and bulimia in girls under 18 during the last three years.

The Sun says that in a recent survey, 75 per cent of teens said they felt they needed to lose weight after seeing snaps of skinny stars like Kate Moss.

Lembit and Ms. Green want the fashion industry to give every model a health check before they go on the catwalk. If they have an unhealthy Body Mass Index – which is usually below the 18 mark – then they should not be able to model.

Lembit said: “If Katie is regarded as two stone too heavy, then the world’s gone totally mad. If the fashion industry is organised to celebrate the ‘dangerously thin’ look, it’s no wonder thousands of people die from eating disorders in the UK every year.”
