Tom Livingstone wrote a blog the other day taking a quick glance at the Cardiff Central constituency. The Tories have selected former Welsh Woman of the year Karen Robson – Tom thinks it is a sign that the Tories are going to start taking the seat seriously. I think it’s a sign that they aren’t supporting talented female candidates.
The Tories got 9.5% of the vote in Cardiff Central last time. In 1999 the Lib Dems substantially increased their number of Cllr’s and won the assembly seat. By 2004 they had won every single seat in the consituency in the council elections, retaining them all 4 years later and in the mean time twice more winning the assembly seat and gaining the parliamentary one. The BBC called the Lib Dem team in Cardiff Central the best organised in Wales, if not the UK and I’m well aware they haven’t let up on the campaigning front – they won the vote in the 09 Euro’s. Labour are in second place and the Tories really are out of the running here.
So what on earth are the Tories, who have just one woman out of twelve in the assembly group and not a single female MP in Wales, doing putting a candidate which Tom correctly (jn my experience) describes as ‘one of their brightest stars’ in a seat where they have not a hope?
