Anyone know the English word for ‘Welsh’?

As I’m sure many you will have heard, Google now offers Welsh-English translations.

The service is a little clumsy and the language is far from perfect, but you get the gist of what’s going on.

It is undoubtedly good news for the Welsh language, and it means that I can read Vaughan Roderick’s blog without having to wait for some other kind soul to translate it for me.

Anyway, it seems that Google has taken the phrase ‘Welsh to English translation’ a little too literally.

Go to Google translator to find out the English word for Welsh.

This has gone way over my head! Just checked, can’t see what wrong! What am I missing?

Sorry. I don’t think I explained it very well.

Ask Google to translate the word ‘Welsh’ from the Welsh language into the English language. (I know Welsh isn’t a Welsh word…)

Anyway, it comes back with the answer ‘Eng.’

I thought it was mildly amusing.

Or it could just be telling you that the word you’ve entered is already in English?

Ah I see. Strange that ‘Welsh’ is the only English word that produces the same result. It doesn’t do the same with any other language.

Nah, because the reason I spotted it was that Vaughan quoted someone in English saying something along the lines of ‘this will be good news for the Welsh economy.’ and it came out as ‘this will be good news for the Eng economy.’
