The Western Mail reports this morning that three of Wales’ most senior politicians have called on councils not to abandon the tradition of counting votes as soon as polls close on the night of the General Election.
Rhodri Morgan has been joined by Ieuan Wyn Jones and Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader, Kirsty Williams in warning that ditching Thursday night counts is a “bad mistake” which could damage democracy.
Kirsty Williams said of election night: “I think it’s part of the Welsh and British democratic process. I don’t see any benefit in not having the count that evening. It’s part of the ritual and for once in my life I agree with the First Minister.”
