Commenting on the Welsh Secretary of State’s announcement on the Barnett Formula and the future of funding in Wales, Kirsty Williams, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats said:
“At last, the Labour party has given in and recognized that the system is unfair to Wales, but the solution Peter Hain has come up with is only a half baked one to the problem we have. It doesn’t address the massive underfunding we’ve had in Wales for the last 30 years and it doesn’t address the issue at the heart of the Holtham Commission which is that Wales wants and deserves a needs-based formula.
“Why can’t Peter Hain see that the current funding formula for Wales is not working? We have long been arguing that this funding formula is not a fair formula for Wales and the Secretary of State’s announcement today totally ignores this.
“If Peter Hain is proposing a funding floor, we’d like clarification at which level it will be set and a guarantee that it will be in place after the next comprehensive spending review. This must provide a fair deal for the people of Wales.”
