A Town Councillor and Chair of the Pontypridd Plaid Cymru branch has resigned from the party claiming that they have “lost all sense of direction and become nothing more than Labour lackeys.”
Chris Rosser is currently serving on Pontypridd Town Council – he plans to continue that role, but as a member of the Welsh Liberal Democrats.
In his letter of resignation Cllr Rosser stated that he had
“Decided to join the only political party that, as far as I can see, offers a genuine alternative and puts people first. A party that shares my view of the importance of Welsh culture and language, but also a party that realises there are many other problems within our communities we need to address.”
Parliamentary candidate Mike Powell has welcomed Chris on board:
“His increasing disillusionment with Plaid has been apparent for some time, and reflects the thoughts of many of their members and supporters locally. They are becoming somewhat of a spent force particularly in the Pontypridd constituency where their vote share has been falling consistently for some time.”
The chair of Rhondda Cynon Taf Welsh Liberal Democrats, Karen Roberts is herself a former member of Plaid. Along with three other County Councillors she left the party amidst a storm of publicity in 2001 leaving the Plaid administration with a majority of only one running RCT Council.
“I must admit speaking to Chris brought a certain feeling of deja vu,” she said. “Talk of Plaid’s lack of any principled stand and their attitude to the communities they are supposed to serve has reinforced my opinion that they have learned nothing in recent years despite the continuing slump in their support.”
Councillor Rosser added:
“The Welsh Liberal Democrats are making huge strides here in Pontypridd and are the only ones challenging Labour. Their members are prepared to fight for what they believe in, and indulge in straight talking which is, more importantly, backed up by action.
I will continue to represent the people of my ward to the best of my ability, but as a Welsh Liberal Democrat.”
