Red-faced Tories score own goal

There must be a few red-faces amongst the Welsh Tories today after a leaflet being distributed by them in Cardiff showed up their own poor record on Council Tax.

As Walesonline reports Cardiff North Tories have come under fire for putting out an A4 double-sided leaflet in Liberal Democrat colours, using one of Lib Dem’s party’s favoured typefaces and designed to look clearly like a Lib Dem leaflet, with only one small line of print to suggest it had been put out on behalf of their Parliamentary candidate, former MEP Jonathan Evans.

The leaflet criticises the Liberal Democrats in Cardiff for raising Council Tax over the last six years by 18% whilst at the same time local services are under severe pressure. However, as Cardiff Council Leader, Rodney Berman points out that record is better than anybody else’s in Wales ad certainly better than that of Tory led Councils:

“This is sheer hypocrisy from the Conservatives because the Liberal Democrats have a much better record in Wales than they do in keeping council tax rises low.

“The only council in Wales which has been led by the Conservatives throughout the past five years is Monmouthshire council – and its council tax went up by 24% during the same time period, significantly more than Cardiff’s.

“This year, Conservative-run Monmouthshire is again proposing a higher council tax rise than Liberal Democrat-led Cardiff – 3.9% compared to 2.9% – so I won’t be lectured by a party that has consistently failed to match mine in delivering value for money.”
