The effectiveness of the Welsh Liberal Democrats in the Assembly Chamber since Kirsty Williams became leader has been widely acknowledged. Today Rachel Banner, a Labour Party activist and a leading campaigner against further powers coming to the Assembly gave a nod to one of her opponents in the forthcoming referendum campaign when she said to the Western Mail:
“It’s important to have intellectual disagreements within the Assembly in order to find good solutions, and I think there’s too much consensus – there needs to be more tension.
“I think there are some good politicians at the Assembly. Kirsty Williams – she takes my own side on quite a lot, but I think that’s very healthy. I would like to see more of that.”
Her views reflect those of pro-conservative blogger, Stonemason, who in December wrote:
Why do we not have “awkward” ……
…… in Welsh politics? Peter Black and his “Boss” excepted.
Asking awkward questions and effective scrutiny is what our democracy should be all about. It is nice to see that people recognise Kirsty’s effectiveness in leading on that in the Senedd.
