More missed targets

Welsh Government claims that hospital waiting times in Wales are now as good as – if not better than – in England have been challenged by the chairman of the British Medical Association’s Welsh Council.

Dr Andrew Dearden said: “I am afraid to say that this is very much not the experience on the ground, day to day in GP surgeries.

“I have often communications from general practitioners, consultants, other hospital doctors and patients, all telling me that the waiting lists, though improving, are nowhere near English levels.

“England has thrown millions of pounds in reducing waiting lists, Wales has tried to look for longer-term solutions.

“This direction – to work on waiting lists but also on the causes of why waiting lists are created in the first place – has been supported by the BMA in Wales.

“But it would be wrong to say that Welsh patients now experience the same waiting times for care as those seen in England.”
