The Welsh Liberal Democrats will use their opposition debate time this afternoon to seek the support of the National Assembly for the Independently Funded News Consortia pilot project in Wales.
As the digital switchover and financial problems cast a shadow over ITV’s commitment to providing regional news in its Public Service Broadcaster duties, this could leave Wales with only the BBC providing current affairs and news programmes.
We believe that high quality television and radio news and current affairs are essential components of an inclusive democracy. Without a wide range of voices, people will not get the robust scrutiny of democracy they deserve.
At the moment, it looks like news provision on the third channel will soon cease – and it is crucial we have something to take its place as soon as possible. We cannot be faced with just a single news provider for Wales.
I believe that this pilot provides Wales with an opportunity to restore momentum to English-language news provision. It is vital for our democracy that the people of Wales receive high quality local news from more than one source. I believe we should take the opportunity of seeing what value this pilot programme can bring to Welsh news.
The switch to digital television has enhanced the ability of people to watch a greater range of television programming and is to be welcomed. However, Welsh Liberal Democrats believe that it is imperative that people do not lose choice due to financial, technological or geographical reasons.
