The BBC report that three British National Party candidates in Wales will not be using the party’s name on ballot papers at the general election. Instead BNP candidates in Swansea East, Swansea West and Gower will appear as “Support Our Troops Bring Them Home”.
In the news today the BNP said they had not intended just to use that name, but claimed that they had been misled by electoral registration officials. However, this is denied by the Council who say that the choice of name was entirely that of the candidates.
The Council’s case is strengthened by a quick look at the Electoral Commission’s website which includes a list of eleven alternative party descriptions for the BNP including ‘Support Our Troops Bring Them Home’. So having sought to hide the fact that they are members of the BNP the three candidates do not even have the guts to take responsibility for their decision.
