Ieuan Wyn Jones still not responding to economic crisis

Kirsty Williams has questioned the effectiveness and efficiency of the Department of Economy and Transport after research revealed that for the second year running, Ieuan Wyn Jones has one of the poorest records of responding to ministerial correspondence within 17 working days.

Statistics revealed from the WAG show that the Deputy First Minister failed to reply to nearly half (46%) of his correspondence while other ministers receiving more and slightly less correspondence were answering over 80% in the target 17 working days.

Items of correspondence for Ministerial answer (Last year)
Items of correspondence answered within 17 working days (%)

Edwina Hart 1491 (1793) 87% (93%)
Ieuan Wyn Jones 585 (818) 54% (72%)
Leighton Andrews 470 88%
Jane Davidson 381 (643) 85% (90%)

Kirsty Williams said:

“The Welsh economy is still going through difficult times and while I welcome the new, but long overdue, economic strategy, I must question the effectiveness of the Department of Economy and Transport, under the leadership of Ieuan Wyn Jones, in responding to possible concerns and questions from businesses needing answers.

“I understand that responding to communication is not the main function of this department, it is however a good indicator of what is going on there.

“The people and businesses of Wales deserve a government department that is able to respond quickly to the economic situation. Last year, I waited over 6 months for a reply from the Minister. If Welsh businesses treated their customers this poorly, they wouldn’t last long. He should be setting a much better example for Welsh businesses and prove that this government is able to respond quickly to any given situation.”
